Microsoft conducted probe on Gates’s involvement with employee

Microsoft Corp. investigated the involvement of founder Bill Gates in the employee almost two decades ago when he was informed in 2019 of his attempt to enter into a romantic relationship with that person.

The government investigated the matter and conducted a “thorough investigation” with the help of an outside law firm, the software giant said. It did not come to a conclusion about the probe because Gates had resigned before it was completed, Microsoft said.

“In the second half of 2019, Microsoft was concerned that Bill Gates was trying to establish a close relationship with an employee of the company in 2000,” Microsoft said in a statement. “The Board Committee, with the assistance of an outside law firm, examined the concerns about conducting an in-depth investigation. Throughout the investigation, Microsoft provided extensive support to the employee, who expressed concern. “

Dow Jones said earlier that Microsoft executives considered Gates’ involvement in the female employee inappropriate and decided last year that she had to resign from the board by mentioning strangers.

The billionaire said in March last year he resigned from the government to devote more time to charity. Gates has not been active in its day-to-day role since 2008, Microsoft said at the time. Gates founded the software company in 1975 and served as its CEO until 2000, the same year that his founding began, and he served as chairman until February 2014.

‘Ratio’

A Gates spokesman said his decision to leave the government has nothing to do with the romantic with the employee.

“Nearly 20 years ago there was a relationship that ended kindly,” he said, adding that his “decision to leave the government is in no way related to this issue.”

The delayed investigation of the case took place during a period during which Microsoft discussed the treatment of women and the Me-Too discussions in the wider industry. Since 2000, Microsoft had also introduced and reformed prosecution procedures to strengthen them, the company said.

Intel Corp. CEO Brian Krzanich resigned when the board was informed that he had a unanimous relationship with his subordinates, even though the relationship had ended years earlier and before he was appointed to management positions in the company. The Board investigated internal and external advisors to confirm the violation of the Company’s policies and issued a notice in June 2018.
